"Salty Pixels"

Canon Explorer of Light Onne van der Wal shares his photo and video work from on, in and around the water from ships to yachts to lighthouses and coastal expeditions in the tropics to the high icy latitudes of the Arctic.

Onne will talk about and show the audience what it takes to shoot high end commercial and editorial photography/videography of a nautical nature on and around the water. He will take you in the air and explain what it takes to shoot from a helicopter or using a drone and then on to onboard shooting a sailboat be it a beautifully lit interior of a multimillion-dollar yacht to a heaving deck of a ship at sea to chasing down a regatta from his 25-foot 25 knot chase boat ONNEsignment. Onne loves being on the water but also loves being in the water in a wetsuit he will show how he gets his award winning over/under images using his Aquatech waterproof camera keeping his DSLR dry.

Onne has shot advertising and commercial work for the majority of the major boat builders and boating magazines in the US and abroad and is still at it 35 years later!

Onne has been shooting things nautical on a full-time basis since 1987 from his base in Newport, RI. He enjoys talking about it, teaching it and sharing his knowledge on how he got to be one of the premier shooters in his field and how he gets that magic shot or angle that is unique to his shooting style.

Van der Wal’s lecture will be illustrated by a slew of stunning still images and exciting videos showing him at work plus the videos and images he has produced for his clients from boat builders to private owners. He has documented adventures and led photo workshops on the east coast of the US and as far afield as Greenland, Antarctica or the warm tropical water of the Bahamas and the South Pacific.

This is not a seminar about studio lit portrait or wedding photography but more about rugged outdoor photography where the elements are in charge of the shooting conditions, and you better be prepared and ready to deal with or you won’t get the shot!
