Introduction to Photo Encaustic with Patty Axford

Learn how to combine your fine art photographs with the age-old process of encaustic painting using molten beeswax and damar resin, along with encaustic paint, pigment sticks, pan pastels, and other techniques. There will be discussion of the process, safety, demonstrations, hands-on time to create an encaustic image that you can take home with you, and individual attention given to each person as they work on their images.
What is Encaustic?
The literal translation of the Greek word encaustic, is “to burn in.” It is an art that dates back to the 5th Century BC and is extremely versatile. The heated clear medium may be brushed on an image, or poured, which will create a dream-like transparency to your image. It may also be pigmented, textured, collaged, among various other techniques.
Provided: Heat Palette (Griddles), Practice Board, Heat-Guns, Iwatani culinary Torch, Encaustic Wax Medium, Encaustic Paint, R & F Pigment Sticks, Pan Pastels, Various Brushes, Scraping/Mark-Making Tools, Cold Wax, Paper Towels, Gloves, Texture Items such as lace, rice papers, stamps, etc.
What students need to bring to class: (2-3) Photographic images any size from 5x5, 5x7, 6x6, 8x8, or 8x10, or 10x10 – all the same size or a combination of sizes. Bring images that you love but are open to experimenting on! Image are best if they are mid-key to a higher-key image.
Images need to be on a hard substrate! Suggested substrates are hardboard (Masonite) or wood. Your lab may do this or you can print your own images and adhere them to a substrate. If you choose to print your own images, contact Patty for information on the steps on how to do this.
Print on a fine art paper (must have a “tooth” for the wax to hold on to – so nothing glossy or satin. Recommended papers: any matte fine art paper, epson ultra-presentation paper, watercolor (similar to a William Turner), or similar papers.
Apron (very important to bring an apron or an old shirt of some kind)!
Patty has studied the encaustic process with numerous instructors since 2013, and has also studied at R&F in Kingstown, New York. She has applied the encaustic technique to photographs and has also worked with it as an art medium on its own.
